Make Life Fair for indigenous Mayan artisans in Guatemala

The Idea

In Guatemala, impoverished indigenous girls begin back-strap weaving at the ages of 7-9. They are forced to miss school because artisans rarely receive adequate payment for their skills, causing young girls to work in order to help provide for the family. Our idea empowers them via fair trade!

The Specifics: What will the $2,500 fund?

We will invest $2000 into the future of 4 Mayan artisans. We’ll focus on product development and business training. We will educate them on material costs and earning profit. We will help them open bank accounts so they can begin to save for their children’s futures.

The remaining $500 will be utilized in health improvement initiatives, empowering 4 families with fuel efficient stoves to decrease their smoke inhalation and chronic breathing problems. These stoves will also reduce time and pain from carrying firewood.

In total, the $2500 will significantly alter the longterm path of 8 artisan women and their families (equating 40 individuals). And our fair trade sales will lead to more jobs/money and sustainability for the women.

I like fairtrade residing with culture and practices of the cultures. Cultures from carving and clay sculpting is a way humanity evolved. Its symbolic to not only Maya or Aztec descendents, but all humanity. We already place so much in way that separates us from spiritualism and nature. Not referring to the bible, as the bible fortifies itself by re-writing itself and it makes the historical value of the bible bleak and dim. Mayan and Aztec focus around nature and the stars... Like European ethics did with Paganism, Greek philosophy. I believe in separation of church and the state, but I do not believe in alienating ourselves from our own planet.

I also hate fences on the borders... I think Canada is the only one that needs a fence. Bunch of Hippies come and go through Canada. No terrorist could come in from Mexico -- They kill anyone that isn't local of their country.

Yup, that fair trade is clever... Maybe y'all should re-invent a lil fairtrade e-bay... Most Aztec and Mayans were killed during the colonizing of Mexico -- Not by European but by the SPANISH, but you still have South America that was full and still has remnants of the dead cultures.
